A Wee Bar in Glasgow Called Squid and Whale That Serves Tacos
The Squid & Whale was a random discovery on my search for the best taco in the central belt. On approaching the building I would have just thought it was a standard pub and would never have thought it would have been a place serving this menu. The reviews I had read were good so I had high hopes.
We were through in Glasgow for the Riverside Festival so we were just grabbing a quick lunch before going to the hotel to get ready for the night out. After pondering the menu for a while we decided on the saiten, the batter cod & the shredded chicken tacos with a side of the spicy fries and a mojito to start the day off.
The mojito was awesome (most expensive drink on the menu too).
The food all arrived really quickly and we started with the saiten ones which were full of flavour and really ‘meaty’ in texture and the pickled onion were a really nice element (this is where the idea of the pickled onions came from for this recipe) and the little fresh hits of chopped tomato helped cut through the richness of the saiten. The taco wraps were quite thin and perfectly round so I don’t think they were freshly pressed which is fine but there would be brownie points for freshly made.
We moved onto the chicken one next which were a bit bland in comparison to the first ones and in the time we had taken to eat the first one the sour cream drizzle had started to make the taco soggy and it was starting to fall a part a little bit.
By the time we went to eat the fish one it was completely soggy and it wasn’t possible to pick it up and eat it as it all disintegrated in your hands and the knife and fork were required. The fish was well cooked and well seasoned so it was a shame that it didn’t last the 10 mins that it took us to get round to eating it.
The chipotle fries were well on the spicy side with a building heat which we liked but could be a bit too much for anyone not so keen on spice. The mayonnaise that I asked for to go with them arrived in a little dish with a glassy dehydrated layer that it gets when it has been left out for a while – slightly off-putting.
Overall the Squid and Whale is not in the running for the best taco of the central belt in my opinion. They started off well with the saiten taco but after that it was all pretty disappointing.
Atmosphere 6/10 (very quiet for a Saturday lunchtime)
